● coryphène nom masculin (grec koruphaina) Poisson pélagique des mers chaudes, aux couleurs métalliques étincelantes, à la caudale en faucille, prédateur, notamment, de poissons volants.

⇒CORYPHÈNE, subst. masc.
Poisson des mers chaudes, aux couleurs métalliques très brillantes, et qui peut être de grande taille. Synon. usuel daurade. Un ou deux coryphènes aux brillants reflets (dorades des marins) sont devenus nos fidèles compagnons de voyage (DUMONT D'URVILLE, Voy. autour du monde, t. 4, 1832-34, p. 662).
Prononc. Seule transcr. ds LAND. 1834 et GATTEL 1841 : ko-ri-fè-ne. Étymol. et Hist. 1735 lat. sc. coryphaena (LINNÉ Syst. Nat. [éd. 1830], p. 72); 1798 coryphène (CUVIER Hist. nat., p. 355). Empr. au gr., ichtyologie. Fréq. abs. littér. :1.
